7 Notes From The Crypt

For my first mixtape I proudly present 7 Notes From The Crypt - a collection of unreleased Italian schlock themes. These themes have become 'lost' to complicated copyright wrangles and a presumed lack of interest from the public. Well, here's 32 tracks for your listening pleasure - although please be aware that the audio quality varies. Many of these tracks have also been posted on other blogs (7 Black Notes, Unreleased Horror Scores, Green Inferno... all sorely missed) which have since bitten the dust. So here they are in one fresh compilation. A big 'Thank You!' for the efforts of the original rippers/bloggers. Enjoy!

Some things I noticed putting it together: how much of an influence Goblin had on some of these tracks (La Bimba Di Satan, Patrick Still Lives); those post-apocalyptic themes rock out in a delightfully cheesy way; Stelvio Cipriani's theme from 'Pieces' was used earlier in 'Bloodstained Shadow' and 'Convoy Busters'; and how Marcello Giombini (long overdue a 'Best Of') must have been the 'go to man' for any scuzzball film project that came along. Bless him.

  2. and i came. haha. you got a great ear! i'm just now getting into giombini's music, and based on this mix i'm gonna start seeking more of daniele patucchi's stuff. in particular, that "warrior of the lost world" track is amazing!

  3. Glad you liked it! For more Patucchi goodness, his score to 'Wild Beasts' deserves a mention... Hey, I just checked your blog - if you don't mind, I'm gonna add you in the 'links' section!

  4. thanks for the linkage, i appreciate that. i just upped a rough-drafted score/soundtrack mix, so there's more than just links now ("the holy mountain," goblin, and ennio morricone got the biggest chunks of time.)

and thanks for the extra patucchi mention. i don't like to pigeonhole the quality of music by nationality, but italians have consistently blown me away with their musical mojo.

  5. Umiliani! Ortolani! Giombini! Guido & Maurizio De Angelis! Cipriani! Patucchi! and of course Simonetti!

While Simonetti has been on my radar since the eighties, the other names have only started to become familiar in the last few years and my gods, in a sane world these guys would be household names!

I am constantly astonished by the originality, creativity and sense of experimentation that comes from every soundtrack I have heard by these artists (thanks to blogs like 7 Black Notes, Unreleased Horror Scores and now Spasmo-Mixtape!).

I totally agree with the last comments that it is deranged to ascribe an inherent creativity to any nationality but when it comes to horror/apocalyptica/zombie then I have to admit, Italians Do It Better!

So looking forward to Volume Three!!!

  6. Did Stelvio Cipriati do some of the music for 'Pieces'? I always assumed Carlo Cordio did the whole soundtrack...If I'm not mistaken I think I also recall some of the Pieces soundtrack turning up in 'Absurd' and 'Ring of Darkness'.
